Introduction to Archive Team
Founded in 2009, the Archive Team (distinct from the archive.org Archive-It Team) is a collective of volunteer archivists committed to preserving copies of websites that are quickly disappearing or being deleted. This initiative is vital for maintaining historical and digital heritage. The team has grown to undertake numerous related projects aimed at saving online and digital history.
The Importance of Archiving
History is often filled with disputes regarding the future of various communities, groups, locations, or businesses. These conflicts are sometimes ‘resolved’ by one party destroying the existing elements, effectively silencing the debate. In response, the Archive Team aims to preserve threatened data, ensuring that discussions and insights can continue by retaining these valuable materials. Our projects vary widely, from a single volunteer collecting data from minor sites to a coordinated effort of over 100 volunteers working to gather terabytes of user-generated content for future generations.
Explore Archive Team Projects
The main website for Archive Team, archiveteam.org, provides up-to-date information on various projects, manifestos, plans, and how-to guides.
Our Collection
This archive features outputs from numerous Archive Team initiatives, both active and concluded. Thanks to the generous provision of storage space by the Internet Archive, we can offer extensive multi-terabyte datasets, which are also accessible via the Wayback Machine, allowing users to revisit lost websites and efforts.
Accessing the Archive
Our collection has expanded to include specific sub-collections based on the types of data we gather. For those interested in browsing these collections, the Wayback Machine is an excellent starting point. Alternatively, you are welcome to explore the various stacks to discover what may be available.
Panic Downloads for Safety
The Archive Team Panic Downloads consist of complete backups of currently active websites. These downloads serve as emergency safeguards for essential sites that are at risk of closure or that would be significantly missed if lost suddenly due to hardware failures or server issues.
